Fairfield's Loss Is South Wayne's Gain

Kelly Soderlund had a nice front page story today about last year's ISTEP improvement at Fairfield elementary and how South Wayne is facing a similar task. Now of course I'm biased because my wife works at Fairfield and I see firsthand how much hard work she and the other teachers there put into their job. The story focuses on South Wayne's new principal, Tim Bobay, who was the assistant principal at Fairfield last year. I've had the opportunity to meet Tim and it comes as no surprise to me that he was sought after to turn around South Wayne. Tim was very respected at Fairfield and will be missed - I fully expect to see South Wayne's ISTEP scores to start improving under his leadership.

I had the opportunity to knock on doors for the yellow petition drive with the Fairfield principal. Sherry Britt truly cares about her teachers, her students and the facilities in which they learn. She takes a problem-solving approach to her school, much like we would do in business, and puts it into place in her building. I would love to see more of this happening in FWCS. I'm glad to see her efforts get recognition in the paper.

Somewhat surprised to hear that she took such an active role in petition drive considering Fairfield wasn't going to see a single dime of money...

Another principal who is really amazing is Trudy Grafton at Study. She has been there 3 years and really been a great influence. Under her leadership, Study has dramatically improved in ISTEP scores, and is full due to parents wanting their kids to be there. Study has a large ESL population, as well as a lot of kids from very challenged situations, but she and her staff provide a warm and success-oriented educational environment.
