What's for dinner?
An investigation by The Humane Society of the United States at a cattle slaughterhouse has led to the largest beef recall in U.S. history. Their investigation documented animals too sick or injured to stand or walk—called "downers" by industry—being kicked, beaten, dragged with chains, shocked with electric prods, sprayed in the face with hoses, and rammed by forklifts in efforts to get them to their feet to pass USDA inspection. I posted that video plus one from Fast Food Nation in a post on my blog a few weeks ago.
Why does this shock anyone? This treatment of animals has existed for decades, but no one has paid any attention.
Most people could care less how animals are treated as long at that steak is tender and juicy and on their plate.
And why is it raising such a fuss now? Only when it has the potential to affect the population does anyone care about the animals. Like I said in my article, as a Nation, we are totally hypocritical when it comes to the treatment of animals - and it is all based on how we label them - pets or food chain product.
